In recent years, remote working has shifted from being a niche practice to a widely adopted workplace model, with Covid-19 playing a significant role in accelerating this trend. However, in more recent months, the momentum has reversed as many employers are pushing staff back into the office, moving away from the remote working approach.
At CCS, we’ve operated as a remote team from day one and remain committed to this model, despite the growing criticism it’s receiving in the media. Some might argue that this approach is not ideal, but our team fully understands the “Why” behind it. Together, we’ve experienced growth in ways that only remote working has made possible.
This blog delves into our approach to remote working, and the benefits that have come alongside it.
What is our ‘Why’?
- People First
We believe in empowering our team to live fulfilling lives, both professionally and personally, and our flexible work arrangements reflect that.
One day you might find us brainstorming strategies from a campervan overlooking the Spanish coast, the next, catching up on emails with a furry friend curled up at our feet. We seamlessly weave work into our daily routines, whether that’s taking a break for a midday meditation, squeezing in a workout, or volunteering at a local shelter. Need to take some time to handle a school run or attend a child’s drama performance? No problem. We believe in supporting our team’s personal commitments, allowing them to be truly present in all aspects of their lives.
And the best part? We do all of this while consistently delivering high-quality work that makes a real difference to your businesses.
- Productivity & Trust
We believe in allowing our team to work where they feel most focused and productive. Whether it’s a quiet home office, a bustling coffee shop, or a sunny spot in the park, our team enjoys the autonomy to choose their ideal work environment.
This freedom isn’t just about comfort; it’s about trust. While we don’t obsess over traditional productivity metrics, and so we can’t spend too much time talking about increases or decreases, we see the results in the quality of our work and the enthusiasm of our team.
We believe in our team’s ability to manage their own time and workload effectively, without the need for constant supervision. And guess what? It works! Our team is built on trust and so we have never had any issues with team members not pulling their weight.
“When we tell people to do their jobs, we get workers. When we trust people to do their jobs, we get leaders.” Simon Sinek
- Cost Savings
Who needs a fancy office when you have a global network and a laptop? By ditching the traditional office setup, we’ve said “goodbye” to overhead costs like rent, utilities, and those endless supplies of office stationery.
But it’s not just about saving money; it’s about spending it wisely. We reinvest those savings into things that truly matter: upgrading our tech, research and development, and upskilling our people.
- Access to a Global Talent Pool
Forget geographical boundaries! At CCS, we believe talent knows no postcode. Thanks to the magic of remote work, we’ve assembled a dream team of incredible individuals from across the globe – Scotland, England, New York, and beyond!
This “borderless” approach to hiring allows us to tap into a diverse pool of skills, perspectives, and experiences, fuelling innovation and driving our growth.
- Access to a Global Clientele Base
By embracing a fully remote setup, we have opened the doors to a worldwide network of clients. We collaborate with businesses from London to sunny Dubai, from Mumbai to the innovative America. This global reach has not only broadened our horizons but also strengthened our understanding of diverse markets and business cultures.
It’s a win-win: our clients benefit from our expertise, and we gain invaluable experience working with a diverse range of organisations.
- Reduced Environmental Impact
By minimising commuting and cutting down on the energy consumption typically required for running an office, remote working helps reduce our carbon footprint.
At CCS, we are proud to contribute to sustainability efforts by embracing a model that is not only good for our business but also for the wider society.
Our Approach
At CCS, we’re all about keeping our team close-knit and supported, no matter where we’re working from.
Those quick chats you have in the office? We don’t wait for a formal meeting to connect. Need a teammate? Just ping them – you’ll get a speedy reply, guaranteed. When we say “present,” we truly mean it. It’s more than just a status on Teams; it’s about being available and engaged. That goes for our clients too – we keep the conversation flowing.
For the record, when we’re “not present”? Well, let’s just say we’ve taken “out of office” to a whole new level!
- Socials 🍻
Think remote work means missing out on the social buzz? Not at CCS. Whether it’s a festive Christmas dinner, a spontaneous night out at a show, or some friendly competition at an international sporting event, we do so much more than just ‘work’ together!
- Stand-Up Calls 🧍
At CCS, we rely on Google Workspace for our daily interactions and collaboration. We have daily stand-up calls to talk about what we’re up to, what we’ve accomplished, and what’s on our plates. But we don’t just talk about work. We also like to chat about non-work stuff to keep things fun and human.
- Daily Status Updates 🔋/🪫
In a traditional office, body language can reveal a lot about how someone is feeling. Since this is harder to gauge in a remote environment, we use daily status updates at CCS. Each team member shares a simple rating out of 10 to indicate how they’re feeling and how energised they are for the day. This helps us stay aware of each other’s moods and provide support when needed.
- Lunch and Learn Sessions 🍽️
We’re all about keeping our brains engaged and learning new stuff. We know that everyone on our team has something unique to share, our “Lunch and Learn” sessions give people a chance to share knowledge on topics they’re passionate about. It’s a great way to pick up some new knowledge and bond as a team, even if we’re not all in the same place.
Final Thoughts
The shift to remote work is more than just a trend—it’s a fundamental change in how the world approaches employment. From greater flexibility and increased talent pool to cost savings and environmental benefits, the advantages of remote working are reshaping the future of work.
